On 17 December 1903 the Flyer stayed up for 12 seconds, then longer. The Wrights’ real invention was control: wing-warping, a canard elevator, and a rudder, tested in a wind tunnel of their own. Powered, sustained, controlled flight turned a dream into an engineering problem. Sixty-six years later a crew landed on the Moon. Many people saw both.

How the mechanism is arranged

Wing for lift, propeller for thrust, movable surfaces for control — three-axis control is the real invention.

How it works

  1. A light gasoline engine turns two propellers.
  2. Wings generate lift as air moves over their camber.
  3. The pilot warps wings and moves surfaces to stay balanced.
