On 17 December 1903 the Flyer stayed up for 12 seconds, then longer. The Wrights’ real invention was control: wing-warping, a canard elevator, and a rudder, tested in a wind tunnel of their own. Powered, sustained, controlled flight turned a dream into an engineering problem. Sixty-six years later a crew landed on the Moon. Many people saw both.
