Chemicals

Plants need nitrogen. The air is full of it, locked as N₂. Haber found a catalyst, heat, and pressure that would stitch hydrogen to nitrogen as ammonia. Bosch scaled the autoclaves. Fertilizer from air fed a population boom. The same ammonia fed explosives in both world wars. Few processes have a double ledger so stark.

How the mechanism is arranged

N₂3 H₂2 NH₃
N₂ + 3 H₂ ⇌ 2 NH₃ under heat, pressure, and an iron catalyst. Air becomes fertilizer.

How it works

  1. Mix nitrogen and hydrogen at high pressure over an iron catalyst.
  2. Ammonia forms; cool it out; recycle the rest.
  3. Convert ammonia to nitrates for fertilizer or further chemistry.
