Inventors
Ismail al-Jazari
1136–1206 · Mechanical engineer
Upper Mesopotamia
Al-Jazari’s Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices is a shop manual with pictures: water clocks, pumps, automata. He is here because a drawing you can build from is itself a technology. The Islamic workshop tradition sits on the road from Hellenistic mechanics to later European clockwork.

Why it mattered
- Treated automata as engineering, not only court magic.
- Left a visual language of cams, valves, and feedback.
